All people in Uist have the opportunity and support they need to be healthy, to live with dignity, to experience wellbeing at all stages in their lives, and to be part of an inclusive and caring community.
From Eriskay to Berneray, we aim to enhance health and wellbeing at all stages of life by providing care and support and promoting social inclusion, participation, and dignity for all.
We are guided by our organisational values, or core principles. All Tagsa Uibhist employees and volunteers strive at all times to be:
Tagsa Uibhist is a community-based charity whose aim is to promote health and wellbeing in Uist.
Taking a holistic approach, we help people to live life to the full and to access the care and support they need to reach their potential. We find ways to connect people with each other, to be physically active, to learn new skills and fulfilling activities, and to take an active part in community life.
Tagsa Uibhist’s office is in Balivanich on the Isle of Benbecula, in the Southern Isles of the Outer Hebrides. Since being founded in 1999, we have been providing support to people with a range of support needs as well as support for carers through a range of services, from Care at Home to Community Transport and Community Gardens. A lot of our work is with the wonderful elderly community in Uist, but we also work with young people and families.
Our team have expertise in supporting individuals with a range of needs, ensuring that the care given is personal and adapted to the unique culture of Uist, with many of our carers fluent in Gaelic. Knowing that many people’s homes are on crofts and can be distant from neighbours, friends, and family, we adapt our services so that we always reach all of our clients as planned. Tagsa vehicles and staff are constantly on the move to reach each and every corner of Uist, from Eriskay to Berneray, providing community transport for those who need it and making regular visits. Our team support elderly people and those with additional support needs to live independently in their own homes. We also create opportunities for people who may feel isolated to meet with others for different activities, or just a cup of tea and a chat.
Tagsa staff have expertise in supporting people with dementia and memory loss, through one-to-one support visits as well, as through organising stimulating and enjoyable social activities, which reduce isolation and loneliness. In our work we aim to contribute to Uist being a Dementia Friendly Community, working closely with Alzheimer Scotland.
It is the aim of Tagsa for people who have support needs to live as independently as possible and to be visible and active within their community.
We also know that those who care for a loved one need to be able to take a break from caring. Tagsa offers respite care at home to support carers to take time out to look after themselves, and so that they do not become exhausted and run down.
As an organisation we adhere the National Care Standards for Scotland and provide regulated services, with regular reviews and inspections by the Care Inspectorate. Tagsa Uibhist staff receive core training in the National Care Standards, and have the mandatory qualifications required for the work they do as carers.
As an organisation we aim to offer career paths in social care and support, community transport, community gardening and mental health support by providing training, coaching, and mentoring so that our staff can grow into their roles, gain qualifications, learn new skills and build knowledge and self-confidence.
Our Care Management Team provide regular supervision to our Home Carers so that by combining practical skills with professional learning we can provide a consistently provide a high quality of care.
As a community based charitable organisation, our team pro-actively participate in community meetings, inter-agency meetings and work closely on a daily basis with the staff of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and the NHS. We work in collaboration with other voluntary sector organisations so that we each add value and achieve the best possible results together.
